Ecocem, Dunkirk

Walsh Goodfellow served as lead designer for this ambitious project in northern France, providing full design and layout services. Ecocem appointed Walsh Goodfellow from early concept through planning, tender, and construction stages, ensuring design continuity and technical coordination throughout the project. Walsh Goodfellow designed all steel frames and foundations supporting the Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) production facility. Working closely with equipment suppliers and Ecocem’s production team, the practice carefully coordinated the process plant and manufacturing facilities with the supporting structural framework, while maintaining a clear focus on end-user needs and the efficiencies required to deliver an award-winning product.

The project included demolition of an existing factory and warehouse to accommodate the new GGBS production facility. The new development comprised a grinding mill and filter plant, a workshop and compressor building, outload silos with weighbridges, storage silos, an operations control building and laboratory, as well as electrical transformer installations and substations. Walsh Goodfellow also planned and coordinated the GBS stockpile yard and its associated retaining structures.

Key services provided included:

• Preparation of initial layouts and vehicle tracking to enable the client to assess operational efficiency.
• Production of planning documentation and drawings to support statutory approvals.
• Facilitation of design coordination workshops for the design-and-build team.
• Structural design of all substructures and superstructures for the process plant and silo supports.
• Development of design intent for all associated civil works.
• Value engineering was carried out by assessing and reutilising the existing foundation where possible.
